Gail Kirkman

I specialize in introducing beginners to the sport of eventing.  My focus in teaching is to help students learn how to ride a horse in a correct, balanced, effective, relaxed position.  I achieve this by incorporating many tenants of yoga into my lessons – from the basic philosophy to the physicality.  I’ve seen great success in students who practice “equine yoga poses” on the mat which provide for increased hip opening, posture, breathing and body control that is completely transferrable from the mat to the horse.

I have been riding and competing for 30+ years and teaching for 20 years.  I’ve worked with rank beginners up to intermediate adults.  As a child, I learned “how to stick to a horse like glue” and I pass this knowledge on to my students. I credit my many years of riding and my recent years of practicing yoga for my ability to be a patient instructor. I’m a firm believer in positive feedback. I’m a friendly person who is focused on building a rider’s confidence while being safe and having fun.

I am continually bringing new knowledge to the lessons; I take weekly lessons, am a working student for my trainer, and participate in and audit clinics.  I am currently re-training a 6 year old off the track thoroughbred to the sport of eventing.  I also am the proud owner of a talented pony, Princess Fiona and my 25-year-old retired TB mare, Touch.

Karen Lorenzo

I specialize in helping students learn and compete in the sport of eventing. Eventing is an Olympic discipline that is referred to as the “equestrian triathlon”. The sport involves working with horses in three phases of competition which include dressage, cross country jumping, and stadium jumping.

In addition to teaching others, I have trained and competed my own horse, “Frosted Mug” to the top levels of the sport including international competitions. I have also worked with many young horses bringing them through the levels, meticulously building their confidence and skills to keep them moving along in their training. I am currently campaigning several young horses for owners and students

I teach private and semi-private lessons at various times during the week. I offer dressage, stadium jumping and cross country training.

Caroline Teich

I started riding at four years old and loved it so much that I have never stopped!  I want my students to develop the same passion for riding, while having fun and making new equine and humans friends.

I was lucky to have a great pony and a great trainer to help me learn.  By 15, I was the top junior rider at the Preliminary (3’6) level in New England.  I qualified to ride in the American Eventing Championships and won 4th place with a legendary horse named Show of Heart.

Today I am helping my students to meet their goals whether it’s learning to trot, jumping their first fence, or winning first place at a show!

I also love to hunt for great horses and ponies and retrain them for new jobs for their new owners.  Some of my favorite projects were Freddy, Rex and Maverick. This year, I am re-training two ex-race horses, Zeus and Sarah, to become sport horses.

I teach junior and senior riders at all levels, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Judy Francisco

My background includes ballet training with George Balanchine, earning a degree in Therapeutic Horsemanship, and studying principles of classic riding with Robert Hall who rode and taught at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.   Ballet gave me understanding of the body along with rhythm and timing and how to apply that knowledge to riding.  The therapeutic courses brought me a deeper knowledge of human anatomy and helped me to be an effective instructor with all body types and abilities.

I have raised six children, eight horses, dogs and cats too numerous to mention and 2 Amazon parrots.  Four of my children were upper level U.S. Pony Clubbers, and members of 4-H.  I am passionate and patient about teaching the basics of dressage because whatever your goal on horseback, the idea of becoming a partner with your horse is key to your success.

I write an ongoing column on dogs at www.examiner.com/x-2291-Boston-Dogs-Examiner.
